A mental health social worker has been jailed for four years for sexually abusing a girl of eight.

Michael Pointon, 42, of Prince Andrew Road, Broadstairs, Kent, was found guilty at Canterbury Crown Court last week of five offences of indecent assault and one of gross indecency.

The offences, which took place nine years ago, came to light when Pointon phoned a friend to admit having touched the girl and forcing her to touch him. He then handed himself in to the police.

Pointon has been suspended from the social care register in England until 9 June 2011 while the General Social Care Council investigates.
