VACANCY NOTICE - SOCIAL WORKER

Are you looking for an exciting new challenge? The Government of Tristan da Cunha is seeking applications from suitably qualified persons for the post of Social Worker on the South Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha.  The selected applicant will form part of the multi-disciplinary team working within Camogli Medical Centre.

This is a unique opportunity to work on the world’s remotest inhabited island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Tristan da Cunha, one of United Kingdom’s Overseas Territories, has a very small population of 250 people and we are looking for someone to work within the community to provide a comprehensive social work service.  The post, which is currently vacant, is a two year contract with paid leave (and return fare/flights to the UK or country of residence) after 12 months. The package also includes housing and local health cover.

Scope of Work:

As the only social worker on Tristan da Cunha, the post holder will be required to work independently using their own initiative. The work of the post holder will be guided by the changing needs of the population of Tristan. A flexible approach is essential.

The principal duties are:

  1. Work as part of a small multidisciplinary team providing a social care perspective and undertaking a social work role with both adults and children. To take an active community role in promoting the physical and mental wellbeing of children and adults, working alongside health, education, police and with the island community; To provide training on safeguarding issues to those working with children and vulnerable adults on the island;
  2. To raise awareness of social issues that impact on the wellbeing of children and adults and participate in planned activities to address these;
  3. To carry out safeguarding investigations (Children and Vulnerable adults) when required within the local safeguarding policy and legislative framework;
  4. Work to support marginalised groups within the context of a community development approach.

Selection Criteria:

The successful candidate must meet the following criteria

Academic education level required

  • Degree in Social Work

Accreditation

  • Must be a current member of a recognised professional accreditation or licensing body without restrictions and membership should be maintained for the duration of the period of engagement (or be able to be registered) eg Social Work England; Social Work Wales (SCW); Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC); Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), or equivalent registration body

Experience

  • Ten years minimum post-qualification experience in profession
  • Experience of liaising with Multi-disciplinary agencies
  • Experience in the areas of safeguarding adults and children, parenting and domestic violence
  • Knowledge of legislation and its implications for both Professional practice and management in relation to service users

Skills

  • Physically, mentally and emotionally resilient with excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Work well under pressure
  • Work on their own initiative and devise their own work schedule.
  • Must be comfortable in a wide variety of Environments and be able to relate to people at various social and intellectual levels.
  • Fluent English speaker
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Teaching and training others
  • Must be friendly and professional and enjoy working with people

Terms of Appointment:

Appointment will be made on a contractual basis for a period of two (2) years. 

Remuneration:

Salary will be GBP 35,000 a year, which is free from local income tax. Deduction of GBP 12.50 a month community charge. House provided. Medical cover on island and if necessary, in South Africa.

Job Closing Date and Time:

The closing date for applications is Friday 1st October, 2021 at 4pm (UK time).  Subject to clearance, the candidate will be expected to take up post in January/February 2022 subject to the shipping schedule at that time.
