Service users must be encouraged to help fill the growing recruitment gap in the mental health workforce, Community Care Live Adult Care Services heard today.
Peter Ryan, Professor of Mental Health, Middlesex University, told delegates that one third of the mental health workforce was expected to retire by 2010
He said: “In my view we need to develop increased partnerships with service user run services and involve service users in as many ways as possible just for us to have the services we need.
Ryan told the session on the future of mental health care that new provision such as crisis intervention teams were a positive move but were difficult to integrate within the system and were being implemented with varying degrees of success and funding around the country.
