Government blasted on carers' benefits and court of protection rules to compel cancer surgery

Vocal carers campaign group, Carer Watch, have blasted the government this weekend for its lack of action on carers' benefits. This is the first of those in this area of the sector which I have heard be so vocal on this issue. It seems the honeymoon period for the coalition government is already over but will other now come out and be as critical?

A little late on the uptake of this one but the Telegraph last week had a very interesting story about a woman with learning disabilities being compelled to have surgery for cancer following a ruling of the court of protection under the Mental Capacity Act.
Needless to say this raises ethical issue and is complicated for all involved. I wonder what effect this will have on social workers conducting mental capacity assessments under the act if they know something like this is a possible outcome.

In more legal news, the European Court of Human Rights has ruled that elderly care home residents who see their facilities closed by the council for financial reasons cannot argue their right to life has been endangered to spot the closure.

Finally, following on from The Lion's Face, a play about dementia this week sees the start of another theatre production focusing on a different social care issue - addiction. Only this time it didn't go down so well with the critics over at the Guardian.
