n Local authority social work departments are to play a greater
public health role following the creation of a £3 million fund
by the Scottish executive. The funds are to be matched pound for
pound by councils and health boards in tackling issues such as
alcohol and drug addiction, safe sex and healthier eating among
children from poorer areas.
n Managers who have set their sights on senior positions can
benefit from a public service leaders scheme announced by the
government last week. Of the 100 places available, up to 15 will be
for local authority staff. Application forms are available online

n A government summit about child safety on the internet has
been welcomed by the Children’s Charities’ Coalition for Internet
Safety. The coalition presented an agenda for action at the summit
on March 28.
