Labour accused of forcing older people to sell their homes

The Liberal Democrats have accused Labour of forcing more older
people to sell their homes to pay for personal care. Spokesperson
Paul Burstow said a party survey showed that 70,000 older people
had to sell up last year compared with 40,000 the last time the
figures were calculated in 1995.

Burstow said that Tony Blair and Labour had “raised
pensioners’ expectations only to let them down”, and the Lib
Dems would extend free personal care promised in Scotland to
England and Wales.
