Edinburgh receives extra cash for drugs rehabilitation services

Edinburgh council social work department has been awarded an
additional £1.2 million over two years from the Scottish
executive to increase rehabilitation services for drug users and
their families.

Les McEwan, director of social work and chairperson of the
multi-agency Drug Action Team (DAT) welcomed the award and said
many of the additional services would be commissioned from the
voluntary sector. McEwan said: “The plans are wide ranging and
include enhanced day care rehabilitation, increased residential
rehabilitation, a support service for under 18s and an employment
placement support scheme.”

In addition, a joint project will be established with Lothian
and Borders Police ensuring a fast track to treatment and
rehabilitation for those arrested and admitting to serious drug
related problems.
