New business code on access to services for disabled people

The Disability Rights Commission has launched a new code of
practice to outline the duties providers of goods, facilities and
services have to the public to provide access for disabled
people.

The new code describes what reasonable adjustments businesses
must make to their premises before October 2004 under the
Disability Discrimination Act.

Bert Massie, chairperson of the commission, said: “Millions of
businesses and services are affected, and many are concerned about
the cost of making changes. They need to know that reasonable
adjustments are all that is required, which, in most cases, will be
low-cost changes.”
