Social services spending up 7 per cent

Councils in England spent 7 per cent more on social services in
2000/2001 than the previous year, according to statistics from the
department of health.

During this period, councils spent £13 billion on social
services. The majority was spent on services for older people, 46
per cent, and 22 per cent on children and families services.

The money spent on social services doubled over the 10 years
from 1990/1, according to the latest statistical bulletin.
