Academic success eludes students

Social work students have worse academic
qualifications than either nurses or teaches, according to a new
study from Manchester Metropolitan University.

Social
work came last – in 170th position – in the poll which ranked
degree courses according to the qualifications of two million
applications to the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service
over five years. Nursing came 157th, and education 94th.

Social
workers tended to have lower A-level grades and other non- standard
qualifications that were not highly rated, said economics research
professor Derek Leslie, who carried out the study.
