Catholic Church challenges plans for unmarried and gay adoptions

The Catholic Church is planning an advertising campaign on the
importance of marriage aimed at undermining government plans to
liberalise adoption laws.

The church has made the Adoption and Children Bill a priority,
and is concerned an amendment that would allow unmarried and gay
couples to adopt, could threaten the institution of marriage.

A spokesperson for the Catholic Church said: “If people
aren’t prepared to make a lifelong commitment to each other
then how can they commit to adopting a child?”

The bill, which is due to become law later this year, has been
given the backing of MPs, and is currently being debated in the
House of Lords, where it will be voted on after the parliamentary
summer recess.
