New qualification in disability care offered

A new vocational training scheme in disability care has been set
up for young people by disability charity Leonard Cheshire.

The new scheme will enable care workers to gain an NVQ level two
over the first two years, along with a technical certificate and
training in key skills and employment rights and
responsibilities.

Like other modern apprenticeships, applicants gain
qualifications while they work and need no prior experience to
start the course. The scheme, which is being run under the
government’s work-based learning initiative, is open to
18-23s.

Leonard Cheshire believes the scheme will lead to recruitment
and retention of more staff and help tackle the shortage of care
workers.
