I.T.2 EAT – Overall winners at the Community Care Awards |
The winners of the Community Care Awards
2002,
which recognise and celebrate the achievements of social care
professionals, have been announced for the 10 categories of
projects.
The overall winner was the I.T.2 Eat internet shopping service
for older people in Rotherham. The project , which has been running
since May last year, gave older people the facilities they needed
to find healthy eating advice on the internet, e-mail questions to
a dietician, and use the internet for their shopping.
The service, which is a partnership between Age Concern
Rotherham, Rotherham social services, Rotherham library service and
the town’s health primary care trust, won the inter-agency
category, collecting an award of £5,000. This cash will be
spent extending the service to older people from ethnic minority
groups.
An £8,000 prize for overall winner will be used to extend
the service into two new community settings, purchase new
equipment, and train new volunteers.
This year the event attracted in excess of 400 entries. The
judges – Andrew Cozens, director of Leicester social services
department; Amanda Edwards, head of knowledge services at the
Social Care Institute for Excellence; Professor Joan Orme from
Glasgow University’s department of social policy and social
work; Roger Singleton, chief executive of Barnardo’s; and
Polly Neate, editor of Community Care – praised the high
standard across the board.
Each category winner picked up a prize of £5,000.
