Community Fund cash proves critical

The Community Fund is the most important source of funding for many
poor communities in England, according to research published last
week.

A three-year study by Newcastle University shows that the lottery
distributor is providing up to half of project funding to deprived
neighbourhoods in some areas.

Director for England Richard Gutch said: “In 2000, 75 per cent of
our funding was for activities which were directly related to
deprivation.

“The Community Fund is reaching down to grass roots level within
some of the poorest communities in England and it is essential that
this revenue stream is protected.”

The findings will fuel fears among voluntary sector and grass root
organisations about the financial implications of the proposed
merger of the Community Fund with the New Opportunities Fund. A
decision on the merger has been deferred pending further
consultation.
