People involved in regenerating their communities have renewed
their calls for financial rewards for the hours they spend doing
the work.
Delegates at a national New Deal for Communities conference in
Luton urged the Department for Work and Pensions and the
Neighbourhood Renewal Unit to consider creating a regeneration
allowance.
The money, initially proposed at last year’s national conference,
would allow residents to give up their time to act as community
consultants.
Meanwhile, a report by the Association of London Government into
the capital’s local strategic partnerships recommends they improve
their accountability. It says boroughs should consider applying
scrutiny arrangements to the 33 partnerships, which between them
will receive just under £350m over five years.
