Local council work dismissed as boring

Careers at local authorities are “dull, bureaucratic and lacking
initiative”, according to a survey of young people.

The research, from a recruitment advertising firm, shows that
school leavers and graduates are choosing careers in the private
sector where they believe the benefits will be greater. Another
barrier is complicated application procedures.

Only 14 per cent of school leavers had discussed local authority
work with their careers teacher, and only 40 per cent of young
employees in the private sector said they would consider the
switch.

Participants said local authorities could attract more interest by
adopting a more private sector image within recruitment
advertising.
