Registers proposal ‘needs clarification’

Local registers of people with severe mental illnesses proposed in
the new GP contract need further clarification, it has been
warned.

The registers would be similar to those set up for other conditions
such as diabetes and asthma. They would enable proactive care to be
made available, as well as allowing the mental health resource
needs of a practice area to be calculated.

“There’s no other way we can offer proactive care to a vulnerable
group of people,” said Alan Cohen, director of primary care at the
Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health.

But the centre has recommended that the register applies only to
individuals with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder and that service
users are told why a register is needed.
