‘Support workers put masking tape over my mouth’

A woman with learning difficulties told a service user session how
support staff put masking tape across her mouth to keep her
quiet.

Hilda Turner, chair of Suffolk People First, said she had not
disclosed what had happened to her for years until she became
involved in making a video about bullying.

“I kept it to myself. Now people say ‘forget about it – it happened
a long time ago’. But you can’t. It stays with you.” She said the
video, No Secrets, had been difficult to make because it brought
back bad memories. “But I hope it will make people think about what
is happening out there. I would like it to stop.”
