Adult care Care home abuse in Wales on the rise

Allegations of abuse of adults within care homes have increased
across Wales, the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales has stated
in its annual report.

The CSIW investigated 75 allegations of abuse, involving 162
residents in care homes within three regions of Wales – south west,
north east and mid west – in 2003-4.

The main allegations centred on physical abuse followed by
psychological abuse, neglect, financial abuse and sexual
abuse.

Complaints against care homes in the same three regions rose by 16
per cent last year with 130 of the 165 complaints being upheld.
Inspectors also sampled 140 of the 1,409 care home inspection
reports in Wales to find common themes.

Out of these, 71 per cent made recommendations concerning the
health and welfare of service users.
