The government plans to open a new immigration removal centre in 2008 at Gatwick Airport, it was announced today.
The centre will have around 420 places for detainees.
There are currently 10 removal centres in the UK with over 2,500 places. Oakington in Cambridgeshire is to close in the autumn.
The government says it already sees the benefits of locating removal centres near airports, with Colnbrook and Harmondsworth near Heathrow and the existing centre at Gatwick, Tinsley House.
