People with learning difficulties advised on staying safe

Advice for people with learning difficulties on protecting themselves from crime is published today in a new Home Office booklet.

One in three people with learning difficulties do not feel safe in their own homes or when using public transport, according to a 2005 government survey.

One in 10 people with learning difficulties surveyed had been a victim of crime.

Mencap, Voice UK and People First were all consulted on the booklet.

Keep Safe will be distributed by Mencap, Voice UK and the National Forum for People with Learning Disabilities. It can also be downloaded free at http://www.crimereduction.gov.uk/keepsafe.htm
