Number of single parent families to rise by a third
Single-parent households in Scotland will increase by one-third over the next 20 years while two-parent families will fall by more than 100,000, according to latest estimates.
The population projections by the General Register Office for Scotland show the number of single-parent households will increase from 150,000 to 200,000 by 2025. Over the same period homes with two adults and children will fall from 460,000 to 320,000.

Catholics opposed to gay couple adoptions
Catholic adoption agencies have asked MSPs for an opt-out to placing children with gay couples if new laws come in allowing same-sex couples to adopt.
Legislation proposed by the Scottish executive would allow gay couples to adopt children jointly for the first time in Scotland. But Catholic adoption agencies insist the best option is for youngsters to be placed with heterosexual couples and called for an opt-out from the new law.

Call for charter to boost autism care
Scotland needs a long-term approach to cope with the rising number of people with autism, campaigners have said.
Autism groups including the Scottish Society for Autism told the Public Petitions Committee said they want Scotland to adopt the European Charter of Rights for People with Autism to guarantee improvements in standards of care.

Bug find at care home
Forestgait care home in Aberdeen is at the centre of a suspected salmonella outbreak after two people were struck down with the potentially lethal bug.
One person is being treated at the city’s Royal Infirmary and is said to be improving. Tests have been carried out to confirm if it is salmonella.

Third of Welsh drinkers take drunk option
One third of drinkers in Wales only drink to get drunk, according to new research. The figures, compiled by educational health charity Doctor Patient Partnership, are higher than for anywhere else in the UK.
The researchers found that over-drinking was commonplace particularly amongst young people.
