Fear over £53 billion public pensions timebomb
Pension liabilities across the public sector in Scotland now stand at £53 billion, meaning rising bills for taxpayers and higher contributions demanded from those working for the state.
An Audit Scotland report warns the six main public sector pension schemes must prepare now for the implications of an ageing population.
With a million entitled to some form of public pension, it warns spending on services could be cut as the state is forced to provide for its former workers.

Call for charity tax break to fund the voluntary sector
Taxpayers should be allowed to donate a proportion of their taxes directly to charity, voluntary organisations have said.
The proposals are part of a manifesto published by the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, setting out the needs and demands for charities.
Other recommendations include funding an advice service for volunteer groups, helping establish an awareness programme and more political leadership.

A new quango set up to help Scots children with learning difficulties has only dealt with six referrals since December.
The additional support needs tribunal, which has cost £626,543 since its inception, was established to assist parents who feel their children’s education needs are not being adequately catered for.

Apology over Sweeney jail term criticism
A government minister has apologised for criticising the jail term handed out to paedophile Craig Sweeney.
Junior constitutional affairs minister Vera Baird said that she had been wrong to state that Sweeney’s sentence was not harsh enough.
Sweeney was sentenced to life for taking a three-year-old from her home in Cardiff but an argument broke out between politicians and the judiciary after it emerged that Sweeney could be considered for parole in less than six years.

Man charged in ‘child-in-boot’ probe
A man arrested in connection with a child allegedly placed in the boot of a car has been charged with child neglect.
The man was released on conditional bail and will appear in court on Friday.
The alarm was raised after a girl was seen being locked in the boot of a care at a Sainsbury store in Swansea. The girl was later found safe and well and is now back with her family.
