The government has appointed David Behan as director general for social care at the Department of Health.
Behan is currently chief inspector at the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
The Department of Health announced in January that it intended to appoint a board-level director with specific responsibility for social care.
The creation of a new post was part of a wider shake-up of the DH’s upper echelons, designed to strengthen the sector’s position within the department.
The Commission for Social Care Inspection is due to be dismantled by 2008 with children’s inspections going to Ofsted and adult work to the Healthcare Commission.
