Four mental health trusts are today among the latest 12 NHS trusts to be recommended for foundation status.
South London and Maudsley, Humber Mental Health Teaching, North Essex Mental Health Partnership and the Tavistock and Portman NHS trusts have all been given the go ahead for their applications by health secretary Patricia Hewitt.
Foundation regulator Monitor will make the final decision with the successful trusts announced in three tranches, in November, December and February.
Foundation trusts have greater financial freedom and a stronger input from the local community but it has been suggested they will create inequalities in the health service.
