Many carers have low-paid jobs

Carers who provide over 20 hours of care a week are clustered in low-paid jobs, a Carers UK report says today.

The charity, which will launch the report at a Labour conference fringe event, called on the government to urgently improve support services for carers to ensure they have equal opportunities at work.

It found that 55 per cent of women and 45 per cent of men who are in paid work and care for over 20 hours a week were in low-status jobs. The report also said working carers were three times more likely to report poor-health than non-working counterparts.
