Few detainees left at Harmondsworth

Only a small number of detainees remain at Harmondsworth Immigration Removal Centre after a major disturbance there last week.

A Home Office spokesperson said that most of Harmondworth’s 484 detainees had been transferred to other centres and that an evaluation of the damage was being carried out.

At least 50 detainees from detention centres have been released on bail, with reporting restrictions, to make space for the Harmondsworth evacuees.

The uprising, in which fires were started, began after the publication of a damning report on the centre from the chief inspector of prisons.
