The 24th United Nations Social Work Day takes place today, with a focus on best practice around women and development.
The event in New York is designed to enable social work practitioners, students and teachers from around the world to learn about UN activity and discuss issues related to international social work.
Speakers this year include Sumantra Kuma Guha, an Asia Pacific and Arab specialist at UNIFEM, the UN’s women’s fund, and Elizabeth Clark, executive director of American professional body the National Association of Social Workers.
The day is co-sponsored by the International Federation of Social Workers, whose current president is British representative David N Jones.
