Good practice in providing accessible and appropriate childcare for disabled children

Bradford:

Maggie McDonald, area special needs coordinator team leader in Bradford, says her authority is currently helping around 150 children aged between 0 and 14 who have special educational needs. The council has also invested additional resources in five children’s centre plus facilities so they can accommodate the needs of disabled children.

Suffolk:

Suffolk Council is trying to meet the needs of older children through the Out and About charity. Sue Woolmer, who manages its childcare inclusion project, says it helps out-of-school clubs adapt their facilities to ensure access and provides disability awareness training to staff, as well as doing talks to other children and their parents about the needs of a disabled child.
