Editorial Comment: Can Lewis finish the job?

The fact that Ivan Lewis has not been shuffled out of his role at the Department of Health is good news. It would have been hard to find someone else as passionate and knowledgeable about social care as our Ivan – and besides, he hasn’t finished the job yet.

Revitalising Valuing People is a massive piece of work. And another daunting task still lurking in his in-tray is the need to sort out continuing care.

Last week’s announcement of more cash and a framework is good as far as it goes. But social care finances remain tight and NHS attitudes are proving hard to shift. Lewis’s new boss Alan Johnson should be acutely aware of both these issues. Let’s just hope the next NHS crisis doesn’t push them down his agenda.
