Nacro, the crime reduction charity, has topped a list of the 100 best employers of gay people, published today by campaign group Stonewall.
It is the first voluntary sector organisation to receive the accolade, which is awarded annually. The Stonewall Workplace Equality Index (WEI) 2008 rated organisations on a range of criteria relating to recruitment and employment policies and practices.
These included monitoring of the sexual orientation of staff and regular consultation with lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) staff networks, compulsory diversity training covering sexuality for all staff and specific support for LGB staff.
For the second year running, Manchester Council was the top ranked local authority, coming in joint sixth, down from joint third last year. Brighton and Hove Council came joint ninth.
