Council payout over child abuse claims

Former residents of a children’s home who say they were sexually abused in the 1950s and 1960s have each received a £3,000 payout from Portsmouth City Council.

The 19 adults claimed they were abused in foster care and at the Children’s Cottage Home in Cosham, near Portsmouth.

The group campaigned for two years for an apology and recognition of the alleged abuse. The council does not accept liability for what happened but said that it had a moral obligation towards the claimants.

Charity calls for Glitter travel ban

A children’s charity yesterday called for tighter travel controls on convicted paedophiles — like rocker Gary Glitter.
Glitter, 64, will go free on August 19 after being jailed for three years in Vietnam for molesting girls aged ten and 11.

But the NSPCC said British authorities were failing to ensure perverts like him do not commit more crimes abroad.

Autistic boy in tears after he was deined help in an exam

A ruling that a grammar school had been wrong to refuse to make special provisions for an autistic pupil sitting its entrance examination was welcomed by the boy’s mother yesterday.

The boy broke down and wept in the middle of the 11-plus exam after becoming disorientated by the unfamiliar surroundings.

Official letters to tell parents if their children are obese

Parents in England will for the first time be routinely informed if a child is clinically overweight under controversial plans to tackle an epidemic of obesity that were announced yesterday by the Department of Health.

Ministers have ruled that letters to parents should not use the words “fat” or “obese” for fear they might stigmatise overweight children and cause families to ignore the results.
