Local Government Association report reveals £1bn councils shortfall

Councils face having to cut jobs and services over the next few months to meet a £1billion deficit caused by inflation and soaring food and fuel prices.

A report from the Local Government Association today will show that higher than expected inflation alone will lead to a £500million shortfall in each of the next three years.

MS sufferer asks court to clarify the law on assisted suicide

The Crown Prosecution Service is failing the terminally ill by refusing to be clear about whether their relatives will face criminal charges for helping them to die, the high court heard yesterday.

Debbie Purdy, who was diagnosed in 1995 with primary progressive multiple sclerosis, says that when her condition becomes unbearable, she would like her husband, Omar Puente, to accompany her to Switzerland where she can die in comfort.
