Ed Balls allows five MPs access to Baby P serious case review

Children’s secretary Ed Balls will allow five MPs access to Haringey’s Baby P serious case review on the condition of strictest confidence.

Michael Gove, shadow children, schools and families secretary; David Laws, Liberal Democrat spokesman; Barry Sheerman, chair of the children, schools and families select committee, and local MPs Lynne Featherstone and David Lammy will be able to read the report on privy council terms, meaning that it must remain secret.

A summary of the serious case review was published by Haringey Council on the day of the verdicts in the case last week, but the council would not release the full report on the grounds of confidentiality.

A DCSF spokeswoman said today: “In order to ensure that future SCRs are not undermined and achieve their purpose, it remains vital to keep the SCR confidential.”
