Former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell has posted a message in support of Community Care’s campaign to back social workers in the media.
Responding to a comment on his blog about Community Care’s petition, Campbell said he agreed that social workers were treated poorly in the media.
He added: “Like any walk of life, some are good, some are bad, some are indifferent. But the good are rarely acknowledged and the bad are pilloried, and sometimes the not so bad too. The result – is it any wonder people don’t want to be social workers.”
The petition, which calls on the Sun to end its negative portrayal of social workers, was endorsed yesterday by General Social Care Council chair Rosie Varley and has now garnered more than 1,600 signatures.
An early day motion, tabled in Parliament in support of the campaign, has also attracted the signatures of 19 MPs.
Community Care launched the campaign following the overwhelming response we received from readers after sending an open letter to the Sun about its social work coverage post-Baby P.
