Counsel and Care: Recession causing ‘crisis’ in elderly care

The crisis in care for the elderly is going to get worse during the recession, says Counsel and Care, a charity supporting older people.

Public spending cuts mean that urgent action is needed when the government publishes its green paper on adult care and support in June, according to the charity.

Stephen Burke, chief executive of Counsel and Care, said today: “The green paper can’t come soon enough. Many older people and their families need help with the costs of a care home place, rather than lose their home.”

He added: “Hundreds of thousands of other older people are living lonely lives without the practical support and care they need at home.We must make much better use of public spending on care, health and housing and help people to make better use of their own resources.”
