Gordon, 34, also pleaded not guilty to five charges of cruelty relating to other children. But Abuhamza, 30, pleaded guilty to the same cruelty charges.

Khyra died in May 2008 after being found by paramedics at her home in the Handsworth area of Birmingham.

Serious case review

A serious case review examining the actions of agencies in relation to the family is due to be published by Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board.

A spokesperson for Birmingham Council said an executive summary will be published after criminal proceedings had been completed and Ofsted had scrutinised the report.

The trial at Birmingham Crown Court is expected to last six weeks.
