Head of Salford council children’s services sacked for failings over murder of toddler Demi Leigh Mahon

Jill Baker, the strategic director of children’s services at Salford City Council was dismissed for gross misconduct by councillors following a disciplinary hearing.

Mrs Baker was in charge of the department when two-year-old Demi Leigh Mahon was beaten to death by her 15-year-old babysitter in Salford in July last year.

Public sector pays with fiercest cuts

Patients, pupils and the police are to receive some limited protection from the intense public spending squeeze to come. But the price of that, although the chancellor did not spell it out, will be the fiercest cuts of modern times for most other departments and programmes.

In addition, public sector workers will face a big hit on pay and pensions as they help meet the cost of reducing the deficit with a three-year period of below- inflation salary increases.

Move children out of migrant centres, say medical experts

Detaining children in immigration centres puts them at risk of mental health problems, self-harm and even suicide, a coalition of royal medical colleges warns the government today.

Around 1,000 children, mainly from asylum-seeking families awaiting deportation, are held in Yarl’s Wood immigration removal centre in Bedfordshire every year, according to a joint report.

Dad slams car into social work office on day son is taken into care

A distraught dad ram-raided a social work office yesterday after his son was taken into care.

The man is said to have snapped after pleading in vain with social workers to reunite him with the boy.
