NCB appoints chief executive to succeed Ennals

Dr Hilary Emery has been appointed as the new chief executive of the National Children’s Bureau (NCB).

Emery comes from the Training and Development Agency for Schools, where she managed the implementation of extended services through schools and local authorities in England.

Before that, she was an adviser to the Department for Education and led the integration of local support teams for health, education and social care.

NCB chair  Dame Gillian Pugh said: “Hilary’s expertise, passion and commitment to the engagement of children and young people equip her excellently for understanding the issues facing NCB’s members, and leading NCB’s diverse work programme.”

The NCB was previously headed by Paul Ennals, who announced his resignation in March. Upon his departure, Ennals revealed that the organisation’s funding had nearly halved and 40% of staff were leaving.

The organisation’s budget fell by 48% in the new financial year, from £23m to about £12m. The number of staff will fall from 200 to 120.
