A social worker who was jailed for embezzling £26,700 intended for adults with mental health problems has been struck off the register in Scotland.

A social worker who was jailed for embezzling £26,700 intended for adults with mental health problems has been struck off the register in Scotland.

Powell, a trained mental health officer, acquired the money when she was employed by South Ayrshire Council between April 2008 and March 2010, the Scottish Social Services Council’s conduct sub-committee was told.

She was convicted of the offence at Ayr Sheriff Court in March and jailed for a year.

The conduct sub-committee said: “The crime was directed specifically at vulnerable service users and provides a clear indication that [Powell] is not suitable to work in social services.”
