The Department of Health has granted the Care Quality Commission’s request for greater funding to finance annual inspections of adult care services and others it regulates.
DH funding for the regulator will increase by £10m in 2012-13 to help the organisation recruit sufficient inspectors to fulfil the annual inspections target.
“The business case setting out our staffing requirements has been approved by the DH and the additional operating cost is factored into our budget and grant-in-aid requirement for 2012-13,” said a CQC spokesperson. “Consequently, grant-in-aid will increase from the current £50m in 2011-12 to £60m in 2012-13.”
CQC inspections of adult social care services fell by 70% from 2009-10 to 2010-11 as inspectors were diverted into registering providers to meet government timescales for registration.
This prompted heavy criticism, including from the House of Commons health select committee, which accused the regulator of “distorted priorities“.
