England’s first chief social worker to earn £110,000

The government is offering a £110,000 salary to candidates interested in taking on the high profile role of England’s first chief social worker.

The chief social worker will be expected to oversee improvements in social work practice at a national level, raise public awareness and understanding of social work and promote effective communication between the profession, employers and ministers.

They will be considered a “trusted adviser” to the government on adult and children’s social work issues and report jointly to the Department of Health and Department for Education. Applicants must be qualified social workers with a UK passport or dual nationality.

Candidates could be paid more than £110,000 if they are thought to be “exceptional”, according to the job description. The appointee will also be eligible for a non-consolidated bonus.

Ministers created the full time, permanent post of chief social worker following Eileen Munro’s review of child protection last year. The closing date for applications is 14 May.
