In March, Community Care spent a day with Peter Hay, the director of people at Birmingham council.
Peter’s job covers both adult and children’s social services, inside the largest local authority in Europe.
The video looks at how he breaks up his time, what meetings he spends his day in, his thoughts on the job and the impact it has on him personally.
In the past week Birmingham has been under intense media scrutiny following an announcement to move its children’s services into an independent children’s trust, and Channel 4 aired an undercover documentary from inside one of its children’s services teams. This was filmed before the council knew about Dispatches or the plans to look at taking children’s services into an independent trust.
