Peterborough may ban Big Issue

Vendors of the Big Issue could be
banned from selling the magazine in the streets of Peterborough
under plans for a new by-law.

Council leader Neville Sanders
said that he has received many complaints about the “excessive”
number of Big Issue sellers in the city centre.

“I
will be asking our officers to bring forward proposals that will
reduce the intrusive and sometimes intimidating behaviour that is
all too often seen in our city centres,” he said, adding that he
wants to see everybody engaged in “offensive” activity removed from
the streets.

A
Big Issue spokesperson said: “A code of practice for
working with town centre management is being developed to further
good relations.”
