STAR RATING: 4/5

The full title of this guide doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue; however, the content is certainly worth a look if you’re a manager interested in finding out how to help workers
meet the six common induction standards, under the Care Standards Act 2000, writes James Lampert.

It opens with an introduction for managers, explaining how to use the guide and how to assess workers.

The second part, bursting with tables, goes into detail on each of the standards, really breaking down the skills needed – for example, effective communication and
understanding the principles of care. It offers example questions and notes to test whether each of the standards has been met.

The real gem, though, is the CD-Rom that accompanies the guide. It’s packed with additional reading material and forms that can be used to assess new workers
and record their development. One criticism, though, is that there does not seem to be a user-friendly guide to the CD-Rom’s content anywhere.

James Lampert is team leader, Occupational Therapy Bureau, Kent Council
