Unison and council bosses face last-ditch pay talks

Unison and its fellow local government unions will hold last-ditch discussions with council leaders this Friday over whether they will improve their 2% pay offer for English, Welsh and Northern Irish staff.

The employers’ side called the meeting yesterday, just as Unison was due to agree a ballot for industrial action.

Should they not improve their offer, Unison and fellow unions GMB and Unite will ballot members for action, which could result in a national local government strike.

The 2% offer compares to the unions’ 5% claim and the retail price index inflation rate of 3.8% in July.
