Riots prompt racism action

The LGA has welcomed calls from the Commission for Racial
Equality to set up an “engagement and action” partnership to
develop long-term solutions to the problems of deprivation,
segregation and racism.

Referring to the recent riots in northern England, CRE
chairperson Gurbux Singh told delegates it was a shameful
indictment of society, and especially public services that people
felt desperate enough to resort to violence.

Singh said: “We need new rules of engagement between local
communities and the public services that are there to serve them to
deliver the services people really need.”
