Council underlines stance on truancy

Carmarthenshire Council has threatened to prosecute more parents
who fail to send their children to school after a mother’s appeal
against a jail sentence failed.

The 28-day sentence was upheld against the woman whose son had not
attended school for more than three months.

“The authority takes its responsibilities very seriously and
regards prosecution as a last resort,” a council spokesperson
said.

There are seven cases in Carmarthenshire awaiting the courts.
