Call for rights for all disabled people

A strengthening of UK disability legislation was called for by
Unison members, who argued that the current laws were too narrow
and inconsistent.

April Bell, of Unison’s disabled people’s committee, said that the
union needed to ensure there were enough resources to implement the
recommendations of the Disability Rights Commission’s task
force.

Sylvia McNab, from the national executive committee, said that new
legislation should extend protection to all disabled people “not
just those that fall within the narrow definition” of the
Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

Delegates voted unanimously to support the union’s disabled
people’s committee call for the government to introduce full civil
rights legislation for all disabled people.
