Clarke imposes uniforms

A school uniform for every school is among the reforms announced
last week by education secretary Charles Clarke.

A five-year plan from the Department for Education and Skills
includes an order to schools to introduce uniform, which according
to the government “help to define the ethos of a school and the
standards expected”.

The DfES strategy document also proposes that groups of schools,
including pupil referral units, should collectively take
responsibility for children in their area, with arrangements for
managing excluded and disruptive pupils.

The document sets out plans across education and
children’s services, including children’s trusts,
children’s centres, workforce changes and extended
schools.
